We've Got a Date for the 'Dance of the Dead'!

Filed under: Foreign Language », Horror », Independent », Mystery & Suspense », Home Entertainment »

I'll admit it: Most of the indie / foreign horror films that I see at film festivals and then recommend like crazy ... are not exactly "mainstream" titles. My apologies if you watched Inside, Teeth, or Frontier(s) with your mom -- although she'd probably like The Signal. Heck, even my preferences in studio horror fare tend to run towards the bleak, and hats off to The Mist, The Ruins and The Strangers for keeping me on my toes.

So what's my point? There's one particular indie that is absolutely NOT a gorehounds-only affair. I actually expect quite a (relatively) mainstream groundswell of support once Gregg Bishop's Dance of the Dead hits DVD -- and according to good ol' Bloody-Dee, that DVD will arrive on October 14. Yes, the movie is about a prom that's been overrun by zombies, leaving only the dateless outcasts to save the day, and sure, it's got some gore, some salty language, and some playful sexiness -- but dang if the Dance of the Dead doesn't feel like something Spielberg might have done as a newcomer. (And actually liked horror movies.) It's quick and colorful and jaunty and amusing -- and I think that's the first time I've ever used the word "jaunty" in any capacity. Anyway, toss a red circle around this title. It's not just for the horror fans. (No less than eight Cinematical staffers saw and really enjoyed it.)

And hey, get this! Lionsgate is absolutely GUSHING horror flicks on October 14! Not only the Dance will hit DVD on that date, but seven more titles as well: Brotherhood of Blood, Dark Floors, The Last House in the Woods, No Man's Land: The Rise of the Reeker (cool!), Room 205, The Substitute, and something Russian called Trackman (that looks pretty wild). Now that sounds like a Halloween party!

'The Spirit' Trailer Now Officially Online

Filed under: Action », Noir », Lionsgate Films », Newsstand », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Trailers and Clips »

Lionsgate has now officially released the full-length trailer for The Spirit that Film School Rejects leaked last night. It's over on Yahoo! Movies in high definition, so even if you managed to catch the leaked version, it's worth checking out.

I have to say, this looks nothing like I thought it would. I wish I could say that was a good thing but ... wow. I am not feeling this at all. It's not the classic noir of Will Eisner's comics, it's not really a Sin City rip-off, it's just strange and creepy. The shots of the floating heads and the Spirit falling out of the woman's mouth remind me way too much of those eerie French safe sex ads.

I also have to complain about the emphasis placed on the femme fatales. I shrugged off the poster and the website; I accepted the excuse that to lure in the boys, you have to use the sexy girls. I also realize that just about all the actresses in the movie are bigger names than Gabriel Macht, who's the man behind the mask. But this is a full length trailer, and the Spirit himself is still persona non grata. When are we finally going to meet him?

I dig you Frank Miller, I really do, but I don't know if I can go down this road with you. I am hoping that this is just a really bad trailer, and the film is actually a nice visit to the land of neo-noir.

The Spirit opens December 25th, 2008.

Two New 'Punisher: War Zone' Posters

Filed under: Action », Lionsgate Films », Fandom », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels », Posters »

Two new posters from Punisher: War Zone have surfaced, photographed by Getty at a party thrown for Ray Stevenson. As they are watermarked, you'll have to click on the snipped version to your right to see them. But hey, you also get to see the photos of the party and feel as though you were there.

I like these so much more than last month's teaser poster. I get the love for the Punisher's skull emblem, but he is the kind of character that you just need to put in people's faces. Unless you are Superman or Batman, the emblem is nothing unless it is displayed proudly on your muscular, heroic chest.

VH1 is Searching for 'Scream Queens'

Since other networks haven't been successful with reality shows featuring aspiring Hollywood writers and directors, VH1 has decided to move on to aspiring actresses with a new show called Scream Queens. The Hollywood Reporter tells us Scream Queens will be a new series from Lionsgate that will give 10 unknown actresses the chance to compete for "a major role in a horror movie from Lionsgate Films." Major role, huh? Will she be ... the fourth to die in a cast that includes, say, seven? If so, that's pretty damn major.

The series, which will include challenges (who can scream the loudest?) and acting tips from coach John Homa, will consist of eight hour-long episodes and premieres this fall. I don't know about this one, folks. As much as I love and support aspiring actors and actresses, the talent in horror films isn't exactly top notch these days. Then again, should VH1 hire Flavor Flav to host a segment and dress their contestants in half-naked horror digs, perhaps they'll attract a pretty large audience. The experiment should be a fascinating one to watch, knowing VH1 and their fabulous eye for sluts and drama. Will you tune in?

Christal Films Declares Bankruptcy

Filed under: Executive shifts », Lionsgate Films », Distribution »

Another one might be biting the dust. The Hollywood Reporter posts that the Canadian distributor Christal Films, who have distributed films like Congorama, has received bankruptcy protection with the Quebec Superior Court, and it has 30 days to get things in order. Things just aren't going smoothly for movie companies this year, both in Canada and stateside. (This comes on the heels of ThinkFilm closing its Toronto office.)

Christal suffered a big blow last year when Toronto's Maple Pictures, who have Canadian rights to Lionsgate's films, took their business to Christal's competitor, Seville Pictures. Variety, meanwhile, blames "changes within the film industry," and says this is limiting their profit margins.

The company's hardships have led to 14 staff members being pink-slipped, as well as the company having to give up rights to both My Blueberry Nights and Paris. However, Christal says this bankruptcy business will not affect Christal Films Productions.

Teaser Poster for 'Punisher: War Zone'

UGO debuted the teaser poster for Punisher: War Zone on Friday (click image to view larger version over on UGO) and somehow I missed it. Ah well, it's a bit of comic book imagery to chew on in the midst of Indy Week, right?

I have to admit, I'm a bit disappointed. It's simple and direct, and should excite all those guys from my campus who walked around in really worn Punisher t-shirts -- but I'm a girl, and I wanted one with Ray Stevenson on it. I dig that guy. Still, this is one area Lionsgate probably knows best -- because half the geeks I know go "They made a sequel?" when I mention War Zone. Their second question: "Is Thomas Jane in it?" Yeah, so they have to break this Stevenson thing in gradually, or there will be anarchy.

But look! There's the new release date: December 5th. I hope the teaser poster heralds the teaser trailer. Maybe we'll see something attached to The Incredible Hulk? What do you think? Are you looking forward to Punisher: War Zone?

The Awesome 'Dance of the Dead' Snags a Distributor

Filed under: Comedy », Horror », SXSW », Lionsgate Films »

One of the best things about last March's South By Southwest Film Festival was that I got to hang out with a bunch of Cinematipals like Kim, Erik, Pete, Jette, Snider and Gene ... and one of the best times we had together was during the world premiere midnight screening of Gregg Bishop's Dance of the Dead. It certainly helped that we were chilling at the Alamo Drafthouse, but the flick should play well in traditional cinemas as well.

Which brings me to the point: According to a recent press release, Dance of the Dead is now co-owned by the horror-lovin' Lionsgate and Sam Raimi's Ghost House outfit. I'll leave the specifics for the after-the-jump press release, but suffice to say that Dance of the Dead is sort of like George Romero meets John Hughes. (Read Peter's review here and mine right here.) Congrats to the Dance gang for snagging a pair of partners who actually specialize in high-quality indie-style horror stuff. (And while you freaks are waiting for Dance of the Dead to hit your town, feel free to rent Bishop's first flick. It's called The Other Side and (after watching it) you wouldn't believe how much it cost to make.

'W' Has a Distributor and a Release Date

Filed under: Casting », Deals », Lionsgate Films », Distribution », Politics »

Now that you know what Josh Brolin's George W. Bush will look like, you should know that you'll get to see him in action real soon -- probably sooner than you thought. The ever-courageous Lionsgate has picked up Oliver Stone's W, and plans to release it on October 17th. Of this year. That's 2008. Before the election. Notably, the movie hasn't even started shooting yet -- it goes into production on May 12th in Louisiana.

I never really thought the film would fail to find distribution, though early buzz on the screenplay has been fairly toxic. I did think there was going to be a race between when W would be finished and when Dubya would be finished -- that is, out of office. But apparently Stone is not messing around and plans to deliver the film in a few months, with Lionsgate hoping to capitalize on the furor that will surround the election.

Jeez -- maybe it's because I read too many blogs (or because I live in Pennsylvania, suddenly a battleground state), but it's barely May and I'm already tired of the election. Is W really how people will want to spend their leisure time in late October? I can't imagine, but I respect the folks at Lionsgate enough to think they know what they're doing. Incidentally: Dick Cheney remains uncast. Any suggestions?

Filming of Unfilmable 'Atlas Shrugged' Actually Going Forward

Filed under: Lionsgate Films », RumorMonger », Politics »

Despite the talk and the buzz, I never thought it would actually happen. If any novel merits the term "unfilmable," certainly Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged is it. I mean, the climax is a 60-page radio broadcast! And the entire thing is what can charitably be called a screed, preaching Rand's extremely unliberal "objectivist" political philosophy. So when I heard that Vadim Perelman (The House of Sand and Fog and the upcoming The Life Before Her Eyes) was developing the project, with Angelina Jolie attached to star as Dagny Taggart, my reaction was quite simply: Pfffffft.

But it looks like I pfffffted too soon. Comingsoon.net talked to Perelman this week, and he told them that he's finishing up the script, and that Lionsgate wants to start shooting in December. So, uh: it looks like this might actually happen.

I would commit atrocities to get my hands on a copy of Perelman's screenplay. I can only imagine what it does to condense the thousand-page-plus book into even a very long movie. What worries me most is that the novel doesn't really exist without Rand's politics, if that makes any sense: they're so integral to the story that cutting them out would make everything else pretty much pointless. And I'm not sure Hollywood -- even the relatively adventurous Lionsgate -- has the stomach for a politically faithful adaptation.

EXCLUSIVE: 'Religulous' Poster Premiere!

Filed under: Documentary », Lionsgate Films », Fandom », Movie Marketing », Images », Posters »

Cinematical has just received this exclusive poster for Religulous (click on the image to enlarge), directed by the very funny Larry Charles (Borat, Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm) and starring that oh-so-controversial comedian Bill Maher (who currently hosts the HBO show Real Time with Bill Maher). From what we know, Religulous is a documentary about world religion, with Maher and Charles traveling the world to interview people from different countries and get their opinions on religion. Knowing Maher and his beliefs, it's pretty much guaranteed that all hell will eventually break loose. I think it's pretty fair to say there will be a certain amount of people who don't agree with what Maher has to say about religion. Personally, I think he's a pretty funny guy and I dig the fact that Lionsgate would get behind a film like this. Lionsgate: The Distributor with Balls!

Religulous arrives in theaters on June 20.
