Stauffenberg Offspring Doesn't Want Tom Cruise to Play His Dad in 'Valkyrie'
Filed under: Drama, Thrillers, Casting, Celebrities and Controversy, War
Back in March when Chris Ullrich brought word of Bryan Singer's World War II thriller Valkyrie -- about Nazi officer Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, who carried out a failed assassination attempt against Hitler in 1944 -- he mentioned that the von Stauffenberg family wasn't too keen on the casting of Tom Cruise as the famous Nazi. While some months have passed, faith in Tom hasn't increased. In fact, von Stauffenberg's son says that the actor: "should keep his hands off my father." I'm sure that this won't deter Cruise at all, and he'll do what he can to prove the son wrong -- he already did it with Anne Rice and Lestat, but then again, one is a fictional character, and the other is a flesh and blood family member. If complaints were due to Cruise's acting or the like, I could understand it, but it seems that this is all due to the actor's deep commitment to the Church of Scientology. While I could see that being relevant in a story about Jesus or something else that's religious, I don't see how someone disliking body thetans makes any difference in a story about war and assassination. Yet the von Stauffenberg offspring says that Cruise's roots in Scientology are "off-putting" and that he fears that the film "could turn into horrible kitsch." But he won't stop it; he just wants to complain and hope that Cruise leaves the project: "He should climb a mountain or go surfing in the Caribbean. I don't care, as long as he stays out of it." I really doubt he'll get his wish, as the film goes into production this summer with Cruise and co-stars Kenneth Branaugh, Stephen Fry, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson and Carice van Houten.

Monkia...... did you just out yourself as a scientologist? "I don't see how someone disliking body thetans makes any difference in a story about war and assassination."
Personal hatred for an individual is a great reason for not wanting him to play your father. I know I would kill myself before seeing Tom Cruise act as my father.
You seem to know a lot about the specifics of the church.

I read up on Stauffenberg after seeing the headlines about how the German military doesn't want him hanging around, and I could see why they'd be skeptical that he'd do the story any justice. Stauffenberg did in a way bungle the operation, arming just one of the bombs and placing it ineffectively in relation to Hitler, and I don't see Cruise wanting to play a character that doesn't come off as heroic. I don't think they'd go so far as to change the outcome, but then again, look at Mission Impossible.

I believe that in Germany the "Church of Scientology" is regarded little more than a cult and is not recognized as a religon of any sorts. They apparently won't even let scientologists run for office there. Given this viewpoint, I'm not really surprised.

She set the line straight. If Cruise play Jesus, ok, but a German? that's fine.
The Germans gov are going too far, so is the son of Stauffenberg; he was his quarter of fame.

It is unbelieveable that Germany is still Nazi. They started against Jews long ago, killing millions of them, and they continue against Scientologists now. What will be next? It is the land of intolerance and bigotry. And it is because its people allow it to be.
What happened with Hitler or with the Inquisition should be a huge lesson to mankind. If this is let happen, Human Rights are really at risk in Europe.

Curch of Scientology is a cult that believes in aliens. Battleship Earth anyone? They reap billions from around the world and they all live in luxury and use celebs to prey on vulnerable people giving their life savings to them in the hope that Battleship Earth will one day descend and pick them up to live in Nevernever land. Pleeeeeeease!

Since when did Scientology become a real religion? Alot of places still consider it nothing more than a cult.
And you don't need to be a scientologist to know alot about them. Ever see the South Park episode? They did a good job of pretty much nailing the basics.

Scientology became a "real" religion when it was granted tax-exempt status (again) in '93.
If Stauffenberg fils sold the rights to his father's story, then he doesn't have much to complain about. Personally, despite my hatred for Cruise's beliefs, I still think he can be a fine actor if he's reigned in. I liked Last Samurai very much, as well as Collateral.
Lastly, I love the first commenter's misspelling of Ms. Bartyzel's first name. Please refrain from referring to my favorite Cinematical writer as a monkey.
Hee hee.

I wouldn't want a cult member playing any part of my family either. Unfortunately Cruse still has a lot of pull and he'll do what he wishes.

These German bigots need to extract themselves from the 1940's propaganda wars. Cruise has proven himself to be a great actor and would be doing the German people a favor by passionately representing a hero. Unfortunately his son is a misinformed bigot. It is just this sort of hatred that led to the slaughter of millions of people because someone didn't like their religion and said they were a "cult". Cruise should do a great film and ban it from being show in Germany.

My God, Tom Cruise has even managed to convert Australia's richest man, James packer, into Scientology. Not surprisingly, it has been reported that Kerry Packer hired a detective to investigate Scientology as he was concerned for his son. Now, that Kerry has passed away, Cruise will be nestling in James Packer's ear: "Care to make a donation, James?".

If Tom Cruise is a scientologist, in my book, and to any rational person, he is insane. I would not want an insane man acting the part of any members of my family.
Joxe - Germany is not 'still Nazi'. Because of Germany's experience in WWII they are far more suspicious than other western democracies of far-right crackpot cults.

Marty, your ignorance on scientology is striking.
it's Cruise who is manipulated and does the donations.
Please, look on before judging.

Joxe Arkaitz, actually from their perspective, they are preventing the rise of something like the Nazi party again. This is specifically why if you belong to Scientology, you are not allowed to run for office.
The point being, that different parts of the world see things differently. In the US, Scientologists are granted the same rights as any other religion. Germany does not share this perspective. For them, it is akin to the Nazis in some ways.

Exactly right Ryan. Germany is trying to prevent a splinter organization with insane beliefs to gain too much power as the Nazi's did. Their stand against the cult of scientology is their way of doing so. With scientology's past filled with mysterious deaths, homophobia, and the hidden drug addition/mental instability of it's founder, I don't blame Germany from turning a cold shoulder to scientology.

I think that many germans are more concerned about that the movie actually turns into horrible kitsch. It's hard to visualize Tom Cruise in this role. I don't care if he does the movie or not. People should not watch it if they don't like it.
And by the way. It is quite sad when some people out there think 'that Germany is still Nazi'. How do you know? Because you read some articles or watched some holywood movies about German Nazi?

Stauffenberg's Offspring has proved to be a bigot and a racist with his comments about an actor's work due to his personal beliefs. Aren't those two of the main characteristics of the nazis - racist and bigotry? It seems they are still here - dangerous...
