Superman Man May Not Return Again

As soon as power-director Bryan Singer announced his intentions to leave the X-Men franchise in favor of helping the Man of Steel with his cinematic return, the movie world expected nothing short of a three film cycle. Singer combined with superheroes is pure gold, and the money he was given practically guaranteed a fantastic re-debut for the storied Superman franchise. He even brought with him his trusted and proven writers. The movie world could feel it -- this one was going to be big. Actors were already animatedly discussing their plans for the next film in the franchise. But then ... it didn't happen. For whatever reason, America did not embrace Superman Returns quite as heartily as everyone expected. Now let's not get me wrong; there is still plenty of time for the Film of Steel. Batman Begins started out at a similar pace, after all. But like last winter's King Kong, the arguably good numbers are clearly a disappointment* for such a high budget and higher expectations flick. And TMZ is now reporting that Warner Brothers executives are now seriously less high on sequel potential. Word is, if the film doesn't beat 200 million domestically, there will be no second time for Singer's Superman. And even should it get there (which is still a very real possibility, mind you), Singer would rumoredly find his budget slashed quite a bit, down to the more "modest" *snort* 150 million dollars.
*Do remember, it is the after box office DVD sales where all the money is made these days, so there is still plenty of cash to be raked in from this film. It will turn a tidy profit for Warner Brothers, it just hasn't performed to the level they wanted.

So Singer--and us moviegoers--are, essentially, being punished for the years of false starts, for all the giant-spider fiascoes of the years that Jon Peters was trying to pimp his idiotic "no tights, no flights" ideas. I have a better idea; make a sequel, let Bryan Singer make it his way, and let Jon Peters nowhere near it.

GOOD!!!! I hope they cross out the crappy Superman returns and sting with his stupid movie ending!!! I hope they keep Routh, drop Sting and make a better and closer to the comic Superman Flick! Cause this movie was suppose to be one of the greatest ever, and well it falls very very very short. Thank God For Baman Begins 2 with Chris Nolan!

Honestly, I think it's because Superman Returns just doesn't inspire people to go see the movie AGAIN. In comparison, Pirates of the Caribbean makes me want to see it again -- it's got great action, witty dialogue, and lots to pick up on. Superman is dry compared to that. Nothing about it makes me say "Wow, I think I'll go see Superman again."

So the movie company says that if we want a sequel, we'd better give them more money. Sounds like a cross between a marketing push and a hollow threat.
Right now there is some poor fan rushing out to the local theatre and buying a ticket to see it for the 10th time because he/she actually believes this ridiculousness.

The very addition of a super-kid alone makes me crave more movies just to see if they can pull it off. It seems like a really sh***y corner to write yourself into, but I'm hooked. I've been worried this was gonna happen ever since EVERYONE I KNOW has declared their apathy for the film. Not only does it make SR 2 a less than likely possibility, but NOW Singer's off of Logan's Run AND it gets us even further away from a Superman/Batman: World's Finest movie that I've been dreaming about since I was like 6. Releasing it over the 4th of July weekend was a stupid stupid move, but I really don't get why people aren't going to see a well made iconic film. Same thing happened with Kong, I just don't get the fickle American public.

"So Singer--and us moviegoers--are, essentially, being punished for the years of false starts"
What do false starts have to do with it?
The film was over $200 million not counting the false starts, and not counting marketing.
And it isn't really sweeping the country. I don't know anyone in-person that has seen it. I'm sure some have, but no one has spoken of it.
It just hasn't been a hit like they wanted. And while it will assuredly make money back, and probably make enough to warrant a sequel, the execs are likely disenheartened at how a surefire hit has turned into just another action movie to consumers.

The reason people didn't go see King Kong is the same reason people are not going to see Superman Returns and that is they are both mediocre films. Yes that's right! In this time of excellent home theaters and DVD's for under 20 bucks, people don't want to waste their time and money at the movie theater for a lack luster experience.
Supeman Returns was such a disappointment in so many ways. Not Superman III bad but it definitely doesn't make you yearn for more of the same.

Superman Returns is gonna turn out to be the Superman version of Batman and Robin. Superman Returns was close to being perfect but with Singer trying to be a Gorge Lucas he just ruined it from the plane crash on. I I like Routh, Kevin, the guy who played Jimmy and i even grew to like the new suit but i don't think the story was solid and superman having a kid is what old 80's tv shows would do to get more rating by adding new poeple, superman doesn't need it in this movie and i have no idea how they would be able to build on this crappy story
BATMAN RULES

Batman Begins 2? Did you re-read that inane line? Slowly now...Batman Begins 2. WTF?! He's beginning again? It'll probably have Batman in the title but not a 2. They've never used numerals with Batman movies and they won't start now. ideally, they should call the film simply The Joker. Leave Batman out of the title totally. Originally The Empire Strikes Back was the original title. Later Lucas added Star Wars: Episode...blah, blah to the title. Raiders of the Lost Ark led to Indiana Jones and the Temply of Doom...no numbers, no connection to the original title.
Some have suggested Batman v. Joker.

When Star Wars came out I went and saw it on opening day, the same was true for dozens of movies throughout the years that promised not to disappoint. However when Superman Returns arrived I felt there was no reason to rush out the door to see it. If Superman was going to have a victorious return he would have had to reveal more than a timid round two with Lex Luthor and his moody and sentimental persona.
The movie would have had to tempt me with character villians that we have not seen in the theaters; maybe we needed to see the character villian that for a time killed Superman.
When I finally did force myself to see the movie I was the only one in the theater which made me believe that everyone else already knew what I was about to learn; Superman may have returned but nobody really cares.

Victory!
Now wait three or more years and reboot the franchise with Christopher Nolan helming and bringing aboard the *Smallville* cast like they should have done in the first place!
Next thing they should do is kick Jon Peters off the Warner Bros. studio lot and maybe he'll team up with Joel Schumacher to design the suit-in-a-can and groundbreaking hair styles.
And the home video argument is flat. This film is no *Batman Begins*. It tanked. The better analogy is *Ishtar*.

ps. the Batman sequel won't be *Batman: The Joker* because The Joker is not the main villain. It has the arms merchants and Talia Al Ghul coming to town to take revenge on Batman for her father's alleged death, from what has been reported.
May they cast Monica Bellucci as Talia and Christopher Eccleston as The Joker.
If you want a movie that should have been titled *The Joker*, go rent Tim Burton's *Batman*.

Singer's Superman Returns I think was the perfect continuation to the last great Superman film Superman II. And for you nah sayers about Super"kid", it makes since if you remeber in Superman II when Chris Reeve's Superman slept with Lois in the Fortress. I hope exec's pull their heads from their a##es and let Singer finish what he has started.

the problem is the big budget, Singer had smaller budgets for both X-Men and was forced to get creative. And the money they made at the box-office was considered a success by comparison to the costs, both made more than their budgets back at the boxoffice alone.
With Superman, Warners gave him all the money and more and it seems to me his vision got a little bloated. I think thats why the film is so long, he doesn't want to have waisted expenses so he leaves it all in when it could have been streamlined quite a bit (was little Clark on the farm really needed?).
Also, it may not be a bad movie but Superman is too slow to want to see again and again in my opinion. Kong was good, so was Titanic and Lord of the Rings, but nothing in those films made me want to see them again. Pirates action makes it still entertaining to me a second time plus I love Captain Jack and the whole crew and the ending makes me all excited for the sequal thats coming next May.
Superman, I'm still intersted in sequal but I'm not clamoring for it right now. I know there are a lot of dangling plot lines (practically nothing is resloved at the end of the film) but I can wait.
I do know people in real life who've seen Superman, many wondered if the kid was his then (even after seeing it) and then when t could have happened. All trouble when making a sequal to films where people only remember the stars and some action scenes.
All in all, I think Superman Returns is a good film, doing well at the box office. Not a great film doing fantasically, but a good film doing well for what it is.

This was a fantastic film, despite what any other idiot may say. King Kong was fantastic too by the way. I hope the movie can cross the 200 million dollar mark, so a sequel can be made. Even if they slash the budget to $150 million, thats still more then enough to turn otu another fantastic movie.
